Riding the Wave of Nostalgia

by: Colby Harris

In the hustle and bustle of our adult lives, it's all too easy to forget the simple joys that once brought us unlimited happiness as children. For me, one such cherished pastime is surfing. It's a passion that not only connects me with the waves but also with my inner child. The importance of reconnecting with hobbies from our childhood, like surfing, cannot be overstated. It offers a unique opportunity to relive moments of pure delight and escape from the pressures of the grown-up world.

Surfing has a magical way of transporting me back in time, making me feel like a carefree child once more. The exhilaration of catching a wave and the rush of getting barreled at sunset brings back a sense of wonder and freedom that is often buried beneath the responsibilities of adulthood. In those fleeting moments on the board, I rediscover the sheer joy of being alive, unburdened by life's complexities.

Beyond the personal nostalgia, surfing fosters a sense of community that is truly heartwarming. In my hometown, the surfers form a close-knit tribe, bound together by their shared love for the ocean. There's an unspoken camaraderie that transcends age, profession, and background. When I paddle out into those familiar waters, I'm not just reconnecting with my own childhood passion - I'm also reconnecting with my hometown and the people who share this beautiful experience with me.

So, I encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on their own childhood passions. What brought you sheer delight and wonder as a child? How can you reincorporate that into your adult life? Whether it's surfing, painting, dancing, or any other hobby that once made your heart sing, find a way to revisit it. Rediscovering the joys of your youth is not only a means to escape the grown-up world momentarily but also a path to reconnecting with your true self and building a community that shares your passion. So, ride the wave of nostalgia and rediscover the child within you – it's a journey worth taking.
